Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first official visit to Ethiopia has marked a major step forward in India’s engagement with Africa and the Global South. The visit, which took place in Addis Ababa, highlighted India’s growing diplomatic partnership. Modi received a rare and warm welcome from Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who personally received him at the airport, underlining the importance Ethiopia attaches to ties with India.
During the visit, India and Ethiopia agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership. This move aims to expand cooperation in areas such as trade, defence, digital technology, renewable energy, education, and healthcare. Both leaders stressed that the partnership is based on mutual respect and shared development goals.
Addressing the Ethiopian Parliament, Modi spoke about the links between the two countries and said India stands firmly with Africa in raising the voice of the Global South. He emphasised the need for unity among developing nations and called for fair representation in global institutions.

Several agreements were signed during the visit, including cooperation in customs, training of UN peacekeepers, digital infrastructure support, and development assistance. India also announced plans to double scholarships for Ethiopian students and introduce short-term courses in artificial intelligence and digital skills.
In recognition of his efforts to strengthen bilateral ties, Prime Minister Modi was conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the “Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia.” The visit also gains importance ahead of India’s future leadership role in BRICS, where Africa is expected to play a key role.
