Modi’s Johannesburg visit: India’s voice at a Global South summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Johannesburg from November 21 to 23 to represent India at the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit hosted by South Africa, the Ministry of External Affairs said in an official release. The MEA statement underlined that Modi will put forward India’s perspectives across the summit agenda and is slated to speak during all three plenary sessions.
The Leaders’ Summit, formally set for November 22–23, brings together heads of government to discuss global economic and development priorities under South Africa’s presidency. South Africa has positioned the 2025 G20 around themes such as solidarity, equality and sustainability, with a focus on amplifying concerns of the Global South.
On the margins of the summit, the MEA said Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several leaders and will take part in the India–Brazil–South Africa leaders’ meeting hosted by the South African presidency, a forum likely to cover South–South cooperation and development priorities.
The visit continues India’s active engagement in multilateral diplomacy and gives New Delhi a platform to press for its priorities on global growth, climate and development financing.
The MEA release and government briefings will likely be updated with the final list of bilateral meetings and Modi’s interventions during the summit.
