Security forces at the India-Bangladesh border uncovered gold worth more than ₹1.02 crore hidden inside a bicycle tyre, exposing yet another clever smuggling tactic used in the region. The incident occurred near the M S Pur Border Outpost in West Bengal’s Malda district, an area frequently targeted by smuggling networks.
Suspect Flees, Gold Recovered From Bicycle Tyre
BSF troops grew suspicious after spotting a man hurriedly pushing a bicycle toward the border. When he noticed the approaching security personnel, he abandoned the bicycle and escaped into a nearby locality. A closer examination of the bicycle revealed an unusually heavy and bulging front tyre. Upon dismantling it, officials discovered seven gold biscuits weighing around 816 grams, valued at over ₹1.02 crore.
Border Vigilance Tightens Amid Smuggling Spike

- Officials say smugglers are adopting increasingly inventive ways to transport high-value items.
- The recent seizure adds to a series of similar incidents reported along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
- The gold has been handed over for legal proceedings, while a search is on to trace the fleeing suspect.
- Authorities have appealed to locals to report suspicious activity to help curb smuggling routes.
The seizure once again highlights the constant cat-and-mouse dynamic between border forces and smuggling syndicates. With criminals evolving their tactics, sustained vigilance and community cooperation remain key to preventing illegal cross-border operations.
