As of May 26, 2025, India has reported a significant uptick in COVID-19 cases, with the active caseload crossing the 1,000 mark for the first time this year.  Between May 19 and May 26, the country recorded 752 new infections, bringing the total active cases to 1,009, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. State-Wise Breakdown
Kerala leads with 430 active cases, having reported 335 new infections in the past week.  Maharashtra follows with 209 active cases, including 153 new cases.  Delhi has seen a notable rise, recording 99 new cases, bringing its active total to 104  . Other states experiencing increases include Gujarat (83 active cases), Karnataka (47), Uttar Pradesh (15), and West Bengal (12). 
Emerging Variants Under Monitoring
Health authorities have identified two new COVID-19 variants: NB.1.8.1 and LF.7.  NB.1.8.1 was detected in Tamil Nadu, while LF.7 has been found in Gujarat.  Both variants are currently classified as “Variants Under Monitoring” by the World Health Organization, indicating a need for close observation due to potential changes in transmissibility or immune escape.
Government Response and Public Advisory
In response to the surge, the Union Health Ministry has conducted review meetings to assess the situation. States have been advised to ensure hospital preparedness, including the availability of beds, oxygen, and essential medications. Hospitals are also instructed to report daily cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) to the Integrated Health Information Platform.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has urged residents not to panic, stating that hospitals are fully equipped to handle the situation and that advisories have been issued to maintain public safety.
